Kirk Summers and Erin Isbell started o kafes! (pronounced “oh-kah-FESS”) coffee roasters, LLC, in 2005 with a mission to bring environmentally-friendly, socially conscious (or “sustainable”) coffee to the central Alabama market. They also were interested in the growing trend to produce food locally as a way to ensure freshness and reduce our carbon footprint.  With these goals in mind, Kirk and Erin purchased a 5-kilo Ambexcoffee roaster and began acquiring specialty-grade, sustainable coffee from various importers around the country.  They also obtained Fair Trade Certification from TransFairUSA for 100% of their product.  “Fair Trade” guarantees that workers receive fair wage and benefits for their labors, soil and water conservation is rigorously observed, and wildlife is protected.  After training in the craft of roasting and attending trade shows, the two began distributing their coffee to shops and grocery stores around central Alabama. The coffee immediately garnered rave reviews, including designation in the Birmingham News’ City Scene as one of twelve “must-do” things in Birmingham (specifically in reference to the Calico blend).  Kirk and Erin continue to expand their market but remain commited to careful, small-batch roasting of only the finest Fair Trade Certified coffee.
